
Water and the hair fiber
Hair is mostly keratin protein. When it becomes wet, the fiber absorbs water and swells; as it dries, it contracts. That normal cycle changes flexibility, friction and the way curls clump. Repeated chemical and thermal damage can make the cuticle rougher and increase breakage risk.
The practical goal is not to trap a fixed amount of water inside the strand. It is to keep the fiber conditioned enough that grooming does not turn every wash day into a mechanical stress test.
Porosity: useful concept, imperfect label
Porosity describes how readily a fiber takes up and releases water or other substances. Damage history matters: bleaching, heat and weathering can change the cuticle and fiber surface. Different parts of the same head—and different points along one long strand—may behave differently.
The popular glass-of-water “float test” is not a reliable diagnostic because surface oils, trapped air, product residue and strand diameter can affect whether a hair floats. A better practical assessment is to observe clean hair: how quickly it becomes saturated, how it feels after conditioning, how long it takes to dry and whether products build up easily.

Conditioning is mostly a friction problem
Conditioners deposit lubricating and film-forming ingredients on the hair surface. That can reduce friction, improve detangling, make the fiber feel smoother and lower the force required to comb. For highly textured hair, this mechanical benefit is central because curls create more opportunities for neighboring fibers to catch and knot.
Focus conditioner on lengths and ends. The oldest hair has survived the most wash cycles, styling sessions, weather and friction, so it usually needs the most protection.
LOC vs LCO: a method, not a law
LOC means liquid/leave-in, oil, cream. LCO changes the last two steps. Both are simply layering strategies. Either can work if it gives enough slip and softness without leaving heavy residue; either can fail if it overloads the hair.
Instead of assigning LOC to one porosity type and LCO to another as a universal rule, test one sequence for several wash cycles. Judge it by detangling ease, softness, buildup, style longevity and how your ends feel—not by ideology.
What oils can and cannot do
Oils can lubricate the surface and alter how hair handles water and friction. Some oils, especially coconut oil, have been studied for their interaction with the hair fiber and protein loss under specific conditions. But oil is not the same thing as hydration, and oiling a dry, tangled strand does not automatically solve the underlying grooming problem.
Use enough product to reduce friction without creating a film so heavy that cleansing becomes difficult. More product is not always more moisture.
Humectants, humidity and weather
Humectants such as glycerin attract water and are common in hair products. Their effect depends on the full formula, humidity, styling goal and how the hair surface has been conditioned. Rather than banning an ingredient by climate alone, judge the complete product on your own hair.
In humid weather, some styles swell or frizz more quickly. In very dry air, heavily damaged hair may feel rough sooner. This is a styling and fiber-management problem, not evidence that your hair is “refusing” water.
A practical moisture-retention routine
- Cleanse the scalp and hair often enough to remove buildup.
- Apply conditioner generously enough to create slip.
- Detangle in sections from ends upward rather than dragging through knots.
- Use a leave-in or styling cream if it improves softness and manageability.
- Add oil only if it provides a useful finish, friction reduction or style benefit.
- Protect ends from repeated rubbing and tension between wash days.
- Clarify when layers begin to make the hair dull, sticky or difficult to wet.

Is water the only thing that moisturizes hair?
Water is central to hair hydration, while conditioners, oils and styling products mainly change lubrication, surface feel, water exchange and manageability.
Does the float test accurately measure porosity?
It is too easily affected by residue, trapped air and strand properties to be treated as a precise test. Real-world behavior and damage history are more useful.
Is LOC always better for high-porosity hair?
No. LOC and LCO are practical layering options, not strict scientific prescriptions. Use the sequence that gives the best balance of slip, softness and manageable buildup.
Can too much product make hair feel dry?
Heavy buildup can make hair feel coated, stiff or difficult to wet. Sometimes the fix is cleansing and simplification rather than another layer.
